Gorō was an artist who illustrated books, one of which was a picture book of flowers and birds entitled Kachō Gashiki (i.e., Painting Style for Flowers and Birds). Published in 1892, it included twenty-nine pictures, all of which are included in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. The names of the species depicted were given which was useful because neither their shapes nor colors were drawn accurately. Instead, emphasis was placed on showing the “inner spirit” of the objects drawn which was a characteristic aim of pre-modern East Asian graphic art.
